In one of the most important and influential books of the Beat Generation (some have said of the entire 20th century), Kerouac chronicles the cross-country odysseys, yearnings, and parties of a group of young, discontented adults in search of meaning and purpose. Kerouac’s writing style could be described as having the journalistic immediacy of Hemmingway combined with the lyricism of Walt Whitman.
