Grand opening/this week at Info Island
The Second Life Library/Info Island held its grand opening on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week.
We had great attendance. Thanks to all who attended! Thursday night a combined audience of approximately120 people attended “Education and Virtual Reality,” a mixed reality event in-person, via audiocast and via Second Life. Speakers included Puglet Dancer, Professor Beliveau, Kitty Phillips, Maxito Ricardo, and Lorelei Junot. On Friday there was another 120 people attending a mixed reality event on libraries and second life. Pathfinder Linden was the keynote speaker, providing an introduction to Second Life and education in second life. Lorelei Junot then gave an overview to library activities in Second Life followed by Korrigan Keynes on online communities. BlueWings Hayek and Ray Lightworker talked about the Teen Second Life project and Eiseldora Reisman discussed gaming and information needs of millenials. Maxito Ricardo shared what we have learned so far in our six month project.
On Friday night, Mystery Manor opened with a haunted mansion and a costume ball outside the mansion. Gonzo Mandelbrot won first prize for best costume and Eiseldora Reisman won second prize.
The Science Center, on Info Island II, headed by Hayduke Ebisu, had a wonderful opening on Thursday at 10 a.m sl attended by 35 people and at 7 pm sl by 25. Congratulations to Hayduke and his crew for such a great start!
On Saturday, four of five grand opening activities were postponed because Second Life was down until noon Pacific time and then Info Island crashed three times. The grand opening ceremony was held with speakers Gonzo Mandelbrot, Lorelei Junot, Talispaul Fossil, Puglet Dancer, and Katt Kongo and was well attended. World Bridges streamed the audio for the program – thanks World Bridges! The other events will be rescheduled as single events at a later time. Thanks to Gonzo for his great planning and all of the Second Life Library staff who participated. We will announce future dates soon.

Teen Second Life Library
The Alliance Library System which has Info Island on the MG, is partnering with the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County to offer virtual library services for teens on an island named, Eye4YouAlliance. The goal for the island is to create an interactive and informative space for teens and to collaborate with other youth serving organizations in RL to provide services as well. Libraries need to remain relevant to teens as social places, to offer mentorship opportunities and bring literature and other information content to life such as video games, audio books, and graphic novels.
If there are any youth serving organizations that might be interested in being part of the teen serving island, please send an email to: eye4youalliance at gmail.com for more information. We will also have an inworld planning meeting on ? October ? in the ? on Info Island, (24, 125, 33). We will post Eye4YouAlliance updates at infoisland.org.
Info Island/Second Life Library will have an all staff meeting on Sunday October 29 at 6 pm in the main meeting room of the library. Anyone who is interested may attend.

Rochelle and CW have recently written about their first experiences in Second Life. Mine was similar when there wasn’t an event on, but I had a great time at the Grand Opening of Info Island – watching Lorelei Junot behead herself with a guillotine at the spooky costume party and sitting in the cinema watching Rocky Horror Picture Show with other Library Friends. Oh yes, I also enjoyed the learning in the auditorium. [...]
