Info Island This Week
New exhibit at Science Center
Max Chatnoir has donated a new exhibit to the Science Center on Info Island II. The exhibit shows how a ribosome reads a messenger RNA strand and uses that information to assemble amino acids into a protein. There is also an explanatory notecard. You can find the exhibit on the second level of the Science Center building on Info Island II. Max will also be giving a tour of her SL genetics museum, named ‘The Gene Pool’ on Thursday, January 18 at 7 PM SL Time. The Gene Pool is located at Immaculate (207, 209, 22).

Your Health: What Looks Like a Butterfly, Stings Like a Bee?
Ignore that last part. We put it in for effect. We’re talking about your thyroid, which really is butterfly-shaped, and draw your attention to it because this neglected gland deserves some attention. Hey, January is Thyroid Awareness month! Did you know that around 200 million people have some form of thyroid disease?
More facts:
- Undetected thyroid disease can have symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and fatigue.
- Thyroid deficiencies may affect as many as 1 in 20 women in the postpartum period. Some doctors suggest that every new mother complaining of depression should have her thyroid function tested.
- 25-50% of people with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder show evidence of thyroid deficiency.
For more information, including links to web resources, check out the book created by Rosmairta Kilairta, and housed at the Consumer Health Library.
For reference services, including questions about thyroid health, contact Rosmairta Kilairta or Carolina Keats. We’re here to help.
Area Highlight: The Healthinfo Island Welcome Center
What is it? Just exactly what it sounds like. Our Welcome Center features displays from all of us – the Medical Library, the Wellness Center, and the Consumer Health Library. This month, it’s a series of podcasts on depression, and a poster on toy safety with links to more. Don’t miss the revolving pyramid out front, a teleport point to our Virtual Room, generously given to the Island by Stephane Zugzwang (more on that, later). RSS feeds from Google News, Reuters Health, and PubMed feature health news and research, like the latest on the stem cell debate, legislation on a new Medicare drug cost bill, and Walgreen sales of ‘cigarettes in a hand gel’ (what? – check it out!) Flyers, free for the taking, talk about what kind of help you can find at the libraries, and how to evaluate health information.

Family Tree on Display at GRC
A large “3-D” family tree, which truly resembles a tree, is standing outside the Genealogy Research Center (GRC) on the northeast corner of Info Island I. The tree is a creation of Fangorn Dengaku who is interested in using virtual realities such as Second Life as places where the imagination can form thoughts and ideas into visual tools that teach, inform and entertain.
The family tree sample at the Genealogy Research Center covers the first several generations of ancestors of the current president of the United States, George W. Bush. As one moves up the tree each level moves back a generation showing parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc.
Stop by and take a look at the display. The SLURL for the Center is:

The Genealogy Scribes, which are sponsoring the display and coordinate the Genealogy Research Center is a group open to anyone interested in genealogy (i.e. family history). Information on the group can be found within SL by doing a group search. Contact Abbey Zenith or Bill Sowers for more informatoin.
Marie Antoinette: The Teen Queen Marie Antoinette, Queen of France in the 18th century, who was beheaded before the French Revolution, will visit Second life Library and the “Throne Room” on Info Island II at 6 pm sl on Friday January 26 and Saturday January 27. On the evening of January 27, there will be a costume ball for all interested attendees. You do not have to dress in 18th century dress. Marie will tell her story and introduce you to the people in her life during 18th century France. A young man born at the wrong place at the wrong time, she will share her story from her point of view in an eighteenth century French environment with life size pictures of the people in her life. OCLC Extends Trial of World Cat and Question Point The Second Life Library/Info Island will continue to offer reference service via chat and email for an additional six months thanks to Question Point. Computer stations will be placed around the islands so that if no librarian is on duty in the welcome center, residents can ask a question via email. This service will be organized next week.
