Suggestions to make InfoIsland.org a more Library 2.0 blog

March 30th, 2007 by Namro Orman

I think we all could get more traffic (in RL & SL) by focussing more on blogging our activities and using more Web 2.0 elements in our blog. Librarians have to sell their services more and more, in SL, but also in RL! We should try to show that we really are embrasing Library 2.0 philosophy and use the tools!

  • More pictures should be added to show off and attract.
  • What can we do to make more interaction possible on/from the blog?
  • Isn’t Sl all about communication, interaction, and graphics?
  • The explicit and structural use of tags can be improved to get more search hits in the obvious searchengines.
  • a tag cloud from Technorati tags or Delicious, or…
  • Showing our website stats in clickable form can lead people to others that are coming and going to other interesting places
  • Links to the Flickr Second LIfe Library sets, a flash widget that randomly shows pictures
  • Offer bookmark options and links to relevant bookmarks collections
  • RSS-feeds from relevant sites showing in a sidebar
  • Offer an IM option like Meebo.com in the sidebar for Reference work or just to chat for fun with a librarian…
  • make an overview of the Infostations available for easy access. With the new station you can monitor who is close and even IM them!

I keep feeling a pretty high threshold in blogging to the Wordpress blog.
I am experimenting with the BLOGHUD and find it an easy way to post blogitems from WITHIN SL,
able to crosspost to external blogs at the same time, and to Flickr or other sites.

I would like to blog that way to the HealthinfoIsland site of InfoIsland directly.
What do we have to do to make that happen?
I just want to talk things thrue, to see if if some stuff is possible to arrange in the infoisland blog site and for the HealthInfo ISland part.
We could/should make it a more and more interactive site, if possible.

  • Maybe create a section for librarians to blog on there own on their own interest related to SLL.To make it easy for them, we could maybe do a deal with the provider of the BlogHUD about the price (now L$ 900) And perhaps stimulate people using the bloghud by buying some people a bloghud who really want to try.

It would be great to have in world blogging from librarians and patrons with pictures. I like the bloghud feature a lot and it’s very easy to do.
You can include some html in the post body and it will show ok!
So i am now using a Technorati Tags generator and copy and past that inside my posts!
I am going to be a flying reporter with my bloghud as toolkit. People can IM me and I will come and do a post with a snapshot with urls to RL, Flickr whatever…;-)
Wouldn’t it be great to see almost live pictures in a section of the blog? Or offer an overview of for instance all libraries, or all Support Groups with a blogpost and pictures as illustration?

This is not a complete list of options, maybe we do not want all of them….., and maybe somebody has great stuff to add!
Let’s talk about it  at our staff meeting on Sunday April 1 at 10 am sl (no April fool!

Hi I just got the BlogHUD pro version, and as soon as I get my website and blog up and running again on my site, I’ll give it a try. All good suggestions, by the way, I like the technorati and/or del.icio.us idea. NMC’s website makes good use of it.
