R U A Twit? Yes, Some of Us R Now!
Fifteen people attended last night’s session in Second Life of R U A Twit. The HUDs that I gave out with notecards didn’t work, but the good news is you can get your own! My notes from the session, a full transcript (thanks to 50 Winx) follow.
What is Twitter? Twitter is a microblogging application for text. The practice of posting to Twitter is called “tweeting.” Post what you are doing, right now, via web, IM, phone, or through the SL Tweets HUD in Second Life. Messages must be less than 140 characters. Your updates appear on the web for your friends to see, and they can comment on your posts. The friending feature makes it a social networking tool. Similar websites include NowThen, Jaiku, and MoodMill.
To sign up for Twitter:
- Go to http://www.twitter.com
- Click Join for Free” to get to the Create a Free Account screen
- Complete the following:
- Username
- Password
- Confirm Password
- Email Address
- Character recognition
- Click “I accept. Create my account”
Using SL Tweets
What is SL Tweets?SL Tweets is a Heads Up Display (HUD) that allows you to post to Twitter from Second Life. It was created by is available for L$1 from http://SLExchange.com
To use your Tweet HUD, right click on SLTweets and select “Wear,” then type “/123 help” for a list of commands. Look for the command to set up your username and password. While you are wearing your HUD in world, you get a window where your (and your friends) posts appear, so you don’t need to switch to a web browser to keep up with your tweeting. When you post with SL Tweets, commands are sent through a channel (in this case, 123) by posting /123 in your regular SL chat field.
The SLTweets Hud v0.78: SLTweets understands the following commands:
- /123 help – List of commands
- /123 reset reset – Resets the SLTweets hud clearing all settings
- /123 user – Display stored Username
- /123 usersite – Visit the SLTweets.com Users Web Site
- /123 channel – Change the command channel
- /123 show|hide – Show or hide the HUD completely
- /123 post – Post your message to Twitter.com
- /123 note – Store note for current location
- /123 tag – Store tags for current location
- /123 search – Search your tweets, notes and tags on SLTweets.Com
- / [code] setup - Register and store your Twitter.com Username and Password (unique code for each user).
You can create SLURLS to post to Twitter to bookmark SL locations. To create a SLRUL:
- Click on your map
- Click "Copy SLURL to clipboard"
- Paste into your tweet post
You can create your own SLURL by typing the following, and substituting the appropriate Region Name and X, Y, Z coordinates:

After you click a SLURL, open your map in SL, and click Teleport - the SLURL fills in the correct Region and coordinates to bring you tot he location.

Twitter just added People Search to their application: “This new Twitter feature is great for finding more people to follow because it searches profile information such as name,
location, bio, and url. Come on by and find out if your friends are already Twittering and you just didn’t know it! The search field is on the right side of Twitter when you sign in.”
