Where to get virtual reality rooms for educators and librarians

Libraries can get their free virtual reality room as demonstrated by Stephane Zugzwang in December at these locations. If you have an educational sim not located in the Info Island Archipelago or NMC, let me know and I will ask Stephane to add it to the license list.

“The Virtual Reality Room is a fantastic tool to bridge the real and
the virtual worlds, providing a mean to display photographic panoramas
or sophisticated 3D models in Second Life.

The potential for education is enormous: Many university labs are
equipped with the means to create 3D models, and the Virtual Reality
Room provides a convenient shortcut to display and distribute 3D
content in our immersive world. There’s no limit to what can be
created: Bring students to faraway places, or have them visit the
inside of a human red cell. The VRR complements the SecondLife 3D
tools by allowing you to display very realistic pictures or
sophisticated 3D models.

In order to tap that potential with as little hassle as possible,
Stephane Zugzwang, the main implementer of this technology in
SecondLife, is making the Virtual Reality Room available to educators
and non profits free of charge.

Simultaneously, Info Island and the SL Association of Librarians are
organizing a repository of 3D scenes, so that content gets catalogued
and shared. NMC, the biggest network of educational resources, is
helping the distribution of the room.

The VRR is licensed on a SIM by SIM basis. All the SIMSs in the Info
Island Archipelago, all the NMC Islands are already licensed. If your
Sim is non profit and educational in nature, you can apply for the
license by reaching Lorelei Junot (curator of Info Island) or Stephane
Zugzwang (creator of the Virtual Reality Room). Once your application
is processed and accepted, you’ll be able to deploy all the models of
the Virtual Reality Room – License for Education range on your SIM.
The eduction rooms are fully functional and share all the features -
and the scenes – of the regular ones.”

There is a great story on the NMC site about these rooms fi you missed the demo
