Science Fiction/Fantasy Portal
The Sci-Fi & Fantasy Portal has a new display on the main floor. It
features Asian Authors of Speculative Fiction (the more recent term
for Sci-Fi & Fantasy). Riven Homewood has gathered information about
four Asian authors from around the globe whose novels are published in
English, as well as other languages. There’s a photograph of each
author, a copy of one novel, and a poster with a significant quote
from each person.
Rather than put away the display of African-American Authors of
Speculative Fiction, done by Floria Hand, it’s been moved to the upper
landing and will remain there. Eventually, the Asian Authors display
will move up there, to be followed by a display of Hispanic Authors on
the main floor.
The Book of the Month discussion on The Golden Compass, which was
held on this past Wednesday at 6:30 pm, was interesting and lively.
There will be a repeat discussion this Saturday at 12 noon. Both are
being hosted by Symmetry Munro.
Our Book of the Month discussions are held during the 3rd week of each
month–Wednesday at 6:30 pm and the following Saturday at 12 noon.
Work continues on the Nebula and Hugo Award novels displays which are
on the upper landing of the Portal. For more information, contact
Franja Russell.

Book Discussion at the Caledon Library: The Mysteries of Udolpho by
Ann Radcliffe
The Caledon Library Book of the Month for January 2008 is The
Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe. Published in 1794, Udolopho
enjoyed considerable success in its day, but is better remembered for
the satirical handling Jane Austen gave it in her Northanger Abbey.
With its physically frail yet morally resolute heroine, scheming,
brooding villain, gloomy castle and uncanny happenings,it is
considered by some to be quite the quintessential Gothic Romance.
Radcliffe’s writing, too, is very much in the Gothic and Romantic
modes, replete with overheated descriptive turns, and exuberant
“word-paintings” of natural beauty, supernatural terror, and the
reactions of the novel’s canonical Sensitive Souls
Attendees are invited to come in their darkest and most dramatic
dress. All Readers of 4-volume Novels, Dreamers, Persons of
Exaggerated Sensibility, Gothicks, and Romanticks are invited to join
us, as are likewise all Virtuous Maidens, Gloomy Evildoers, Dashing
Younger Brothers, and Uncanny Phenomena, whether they have read the
work or not.
The Discussion will be led by Alexx McLaglen, of Caledon

New Exhibit at the Caledon Library
Notes of Love: romance in the Victorian Age
An Exhibit at the Whitehorn Library, Caledon VictoriaCity
Curated by Mica Braun
In February, our thoughts turn to love and romance…
While Victorians subscribed to a strict moral code, and complicated
rules of etiquette (especially concerning matters of the heart!) this
did not prevent them from romanticizing both love and tragedy in all
its forms. This exhibit celebrates the fascination that love and
romance held for the Victorian age.
The exhibit will focus on love and all its aspects — from courtship
and marriage to betrayal and disillusionment. The inspiration for the
exhibit was an anthology of Love Letters, giving access to the real
word of real lovers. Sprinkled throughout the exhibit are quotes of
love letters from Victorian authors. Modeled after articles from
period ladies journals, the content of the exhibit highlights the
Victorians’ burgeoning use of Valentines and the language of flowers.
A special section focuses on the fair land of Caledon, and the
symbolism of the rose.
The exhibit, offered to the Romantically minded citizens of Caledon
by Miss Mica Braun of the Caledon Library for their enjoyment and
edification, will run February 1st to February 28, 2008
