Library Buzz on Gender Issues – Feb. 5th

TranscriptGender Issues Discussed at Cybrary City Open Air Auditorium

The first Buzz Session of 2008 drew a group of highly articulate and passionate AVs together to discuss gender presentation and transgression in Second Life. Over thirty people met at Cybrary City’s Open Air Auditorium for the lively discussion led by a panel of librarians consisting of: Katt Tomsen, JJ Drinkwater, Draconius Merlin, and Abbey Zenith. An eagerly engaged audience provided thought provoking comments and fully participated in the discussion that moved from definitions of terms (male/female, gender, sex, etc.), to presentation of gender in and issues of gender interaction in SL. At the end of the hour, the audience still had much left to say, so we decided to follow up this session with a second session scheduled for March 5th at 6 PM SLT.

Perhaps AGE would be a good topic for the next Buzz. LL gives everyone a 20 something avatar to start with. People chose to do a variety of changes. What does it matter if you cannot tell a person’s age? What does it matter if their avatar does not reflect their age?
