The Big Sleep is the first of Raymond Chandler’s seven Philip Marlowe novels. It holds an important place in the hardboiled detective genre. It has set the standard for style and technique that persists up to today. Marlowe is a man with a code of ethics that he expresses rather forcefully in this book. His ethics are tested many times in the course of The Big Sleep as Marlowe faces corruption at all levels of society in 1930s Los Angeles. A seemingly simple case of blackmail moves to pornography and murder.
