Mystery Manor Book Discussion
When: 25 June (Wednesday)
Time: 6PM SL
Where: Gazebo at Mystery Manor

Maxito Ricardo will lead a discussion of Hard Time by Sara Paretsky.
Paretsky’s character, V.I. Warshawski, is a detective from the
hardboiled school and with her “Paretsky is credited with transforming
the role and image of women in the crime novel.” (Wikipedia). It isn’t
hard to imagine Warshawski holding her own in the company of Philip
Marlow, Lew Archer, and Sam Spade. The cases that V.I. (Vic to her
friends) takes on involve social issues and in Hard Time she learns
about the prison system close up and personal.

Rich Idiot Island Exhibits
Rich Idiot island is pleased to announce the opening of two new educational exhibits and library resource collections on the plaza. A collection focusing on American literature and popular magazines of the 1930s is located in the Reading Room on the second floor of the island’s bookstore. Through visual displays and web links, it offers biographical sketches of prominent authors and overviews of period journalism.
A second collection, located in the First Bank of the Islands (also on the plaza), explores issues related to banking and finance during the 1930s. Visitors can find the text of major laws and period documents concerning reforms of banking and investment, as well as information about infamous bank robbers of the decade.

These new collections add to existing exhibits that highlight prominent musicians (in the plaza’s bandstand) and rural images of the 1930s (under a canopy on the island’s north side). Rich Idiot island — soon to be renamed as Only Yesterday — welcomes individuals and groups who want to study cultural change during the 1930s in America.
