Caledon Library

The Caledon branch is located in the the capitol city of Caledon, the Caledon VictoriaCity sim, on Jountarou, the busy “ring road” of the town. The Reading Room is just off the VictoriaCity Telehub, and can be easily identified by its distinctive cruciform copper dome. The Collections and Exhibits building can be recognized from 2 sims away by its towering spire and its Tesla Ground Plane Prim Generator. The library buildings were donated to Second Life Library by their creator, CoyoteAngel DimSum of the House of Wu. In honor of her parents, who taught her to love learning, and libraries, the Caledon branch has been renamed the Jack and Elaine Whitehorn Memorial Library.

The Caledon branch also maintains an outdoor reading room, the Vannevar Bush Memorial Reading Garden, in the original sim of Caledon. There visitors may look over a display of recent aquisitions, find a comfortable tree under which to read, or treat themselves to refreshments while they peruse their book.

The Caledon branch hosts monthly book discussions, and mounts exhibits of art, literature, and sundry cultural interests. With the Clan of Seafarers and Storytellers, it co-sponsors story-telling sessions at a local pub. It also publishes, on its own and with the Caledon Tesla Society, works of of scientific and technical interest.

The collection policy of the Caledon Library calls for two main foci: the 19th century and Caledon’s defining literary genres. Within these areas, we collect primary source material (including 19th c. novels, periodicals, etc, or materials from earlier ages considered important in the 19th century) and research materials concerning the world of the 19th century and its imagination. We also hope to build a “listening collection” of audio books on these topics. A special project will be a “Local Authors” collection for books, stories, rantings, screeds etc. by residents of Caledon, and, in a related effort, we hope to become the home of the Caledon Archives.
