Minutes: Building Meeting, May 30 2006

Greetings,

Last night we had a productive meeting about our new building. We should be able to move in during the next month. We don't yet have a completion date from the builder but we are hoping the next few weeks.

Eiseldora has created a lot of furniture and rugs and put them out over the island for people working in the building group to look over - so if you see furniture and flying carpets, that is why they are there.

We did a walking tour - there are five main areas on each floor with a conference center in the middle. We have small groups which will work on each area - if you want to be a part of a design group, let me know.

The reference area will be at main entrance - Eis and Abbey Zenith are working on this area with input on collections from Cypress.

There will be a "computer" lab area. I am working with Brack and Howard on this area.

The collections area will be designed by Cypress, head of collections and Eis.

The middle conference area - Brack, PF and I are working on.

Another area on the first floor will be an informal/cafe/gathering area - Abbey, Eis, and Cerulean Vesperia are working on this with input and additions from others.

We will have several areas in the new library for exhibits - environments - Jenna Zarrow, Max Batra, Shawna Montgomery and I will work on these. We hope to have them change every couple months to keep new attractions coming in.

We will also have a multimedia area with a viewing area, a listening area, and a DJ booth. PF is heading up this group with Howard, Max Batra, and Brack joining in.

Groups are beginning work now on what they would like to put in the space. If you are interested in working with a particular group, let me know. Everyone is welcome.

Lori

[18:15] Lorelei Junot: and if you think of a project you would like to try, this is a collaborative project
[18:15] Lorelei Junot: and I would tend to let anyone try anything they think might work
[18:15] Eiseldora Reisman: I'll be away until about the middle of August
[18:15] Lorelei Junot: ok our grand opening
[18:16] Cerulean Vesperia: I didn't actually talk with any vendors - I'd rather stick to the business plan, grants & 2 hrs of reference
[18:16] Lorelei Junot: late july?
[18:16] Lorelei Junot: Ok Cerulean, that is great
[18:16] Lorelei Junot: we have had a lot of new people
[18:16] Talia Nicholas: what do we want to do for the grand opening?
[18:16] Gonzo Mandelbrot: How many people are likely to be online in late July?
[18:16] Talia Nicholas: If we don't have too much planning - doing it sooner might be good
[18:16] Eiseldora Reisman: why not late August to get teh attention of Academia
[18:16] Lorelei Junot: we want to thank everyone who has made a contribution
[18:16] Lorelei Junot: ok late August is fine too
[18:17] Seraphima Salsman: I like that idea Eis
[18:17] Lorelei Junot: we want to have different events throughout the day to interest different people
[18:17] Lorelei Junot: some authors
[18:17] Lorelei Junot: a book ball
[18:17] Lorelei Junot: show off the new building
[18:17] Lorelei Junot: our services
[18:17] Lorelei Junot: everyone think late August would be best
[18:17] Cerulean Vesperia: yes
[18:17] Seraphima Salsman: Yes :)
[18:17] Adeghord Malthus: late Aug is good with me
[18:17] Alaskan Nighbor: sounds good
[18:17] Talia Nicholas: so between now and late august we need to make sure that more people in academia know we're here
[18:17] Cerulean Vesperia: come as your favorite literary character
[18:17] Lorelei Junot: then we will have more time to get the QP up and running
[18:17] Eiseldora Reisman shouts: oooo
[18:17] Lorelei Junot: UIUC knows we are here
[18:17] Lorelei Junot: but they have not been coming
[18:17] Talia Nicholas: QP?
[18:17] Seraphima Salsman: Cerulean, I like that
[18:17] Lorelei Junot: I will contact them
[18:18] trixie Enzyme: GW knows as well
[18:18] Talia Nicholas: oh questionpoint
[18:18] Lorelei Junot: Question Point
[18:18] Lorelei Junot: good idea Cerulean
[18:18] Cerulean Vesperia: for the book ball

[18:18] Lorelei Junot: CMSU is having a tour in two weeks
[18:18] Lorelei Junot: TRixie is doing a demo in a week or so

[18:18] trixie Enzyme: actually, it's on thursday of this week
[18:19] Eiseldora Reisman: what better reason to pay attention ot us than that professor are here from you( the libraries's) school
[18:19] Lorelei Junot: well I am a low level adjunct
[18:19] Alaskan Nighbor: Not really. I'm in a special library whose parent institution is a little afraid of anything that looks like a game.
[18:19] Lorelei Junot: maybe we ought to plan an academic day
[18:19] Lorelei Junot: should this be before or after gradn opening
[18:19] Lorelei Junot: or offer tours to academic people
[18:20] trixie Enzyme: that's a great idea...
[18:20] Seraphima Salsman: Tours sounds good
[18:20] Adeghord Malthus: I'll talk to my local academic library - I do some grant work there in special collections - but don't hold out much hope
[18:20] Lorelei Junot: ok anyone want to work with me on that
[18:20] Eiseldora Reisman: We should contact people outside the library world though
[18:20] Gonzo Mandelbrot: The best timing for academics might be mid-September...
[18:20] trixie Enzyme: but maybe before the opening, since academia will be busy with last minute prep for fall semester
[18:20] Lorelei Junot: yes
[18:20] Lorelei Junot: Shadow what are your interests
[18:20] Lorelei Junot: I met with someone from ISU
[18:20] Lorelei Junot: a doctorial student interested in education
[18:20] Gonzo Mandelbrot: after classes have started but before there's serious marking to do
[18:20] Lorelei Junot: FYO
[18:20] Shadow Fugazi: I'm a special librarian with a focus on International development

[18:20] Lorelei Junot: Patfhinder is coming to East Peoria to speak about virtual worlds and education
[18:21] Lorelei Junot: should we have that ini world too
[18:21] Cerulean Vesperia: Or Education Arcade
[18:21] Lorelei Junot: as well as in person
[18:21] Eiseldora Reisman: of course
[18:21] Lorelei Junot: ok we are trying to get more involved with educators
[18:21] Lorelei Junot: we can set up a few academic tours where anyone can come
[18:21] Lorelei Junot: and if they can't come they can contact us for a more specific tour

[18:22] Lorelei Junot: are you part of that gruop
[18:22] Shadow Fugazi: not directly, but I can dig around
[18:22] Eiseldora Reisman: At GLS they were extremely interested in us
[18:22] Lorelei Junot: what is interesting to them Eis
[18:22] Eiseldora Reisman: our library
[18:22] Eiseldora Reisman: they want to know when they can send student here to do research
[18:22] Lorelei Junot: ok any other ideas for immediate things we need to do
[18:23] Eiseldora Reisman: and if we can have a tool in game to create citations

[18:30] Lorelei Junot: instead of Second Life library
[18:30] Seraphima Salsman: Starting the end of July I can work on usability stuff, like making sure it is easy to find the lib
[18:31] Lorelei Junot: I can look into it

[18:31] Lorelei Junot: ok
[18:31] Adeghord Malthus: Can we have multiple listings? Info Island and the library?
[18:31] Eiseldora Reisman: with the word library
[18:31] Lorelei Junot: Tes and we can have listings for each place
