ABOUT THE SLL2.0 Project
Q. Why do you help at the library?
A. To explore the possibilities of this new environment.

Q. What kind of possibilities you see?
A. I think our users are here... and this is one way we can be helpful and relevant to them. This is a great way to introduce people to library services, teach classes, connect with users. The idea of the librarian who sits behind a desk and reads books is long gone.

Q, What are people usually do here?
A. they try to get information about sl or they try to read real books; when people come here and ask questions about SL, we try to answer.

Q. Do you get many patrons?
A. I'm averaged 12-15 an hour in this wed 6-8 shift: half citizens, lotta newbies

Q. What kind of questions do you get?
A. SL directional, like: what is there to see? where is the library cafe? where is health info island? and SL reference, like: how do I stop dancing? can I delete stuff from my inventory? as well as real life directional and reference questions.

Q. Do you get much RL ref?
A. Someone logged in from Logan Airport in Boston to ask how to get from one terminal to another without going outside. Time zone questions are also popular, and what do you do in real life as well as A/S/L?

Q. I wonder how many people on SL come to info island besides librarian, how well people how about this location A. I'd estimate 50%, we get a lot a newbies! Just like in RL; when in doubt, go to the library! I get questions about finding a job and buying virtual land.

Q. Do you know what types of keywords people use when searching to end up here?
A. Good question I don't, but maybe I need to ask.

Q. Do most people search library you think?
A. They might search info or help.

Q. How does volunteering here work exactly?
A. There is an info packet in the main building. You get some training and commit to a 2 hour shift once a week. IM Hypatia Dejavu to set up a schedule and more info. And check out http://infoisland.org

Q. What is the dress code for library volunteers?
A. By it's nature SL is a very casual environment, but we do need to maintain certain minimum standards to be approachable and avoid professional embarassment. The dress code is simple:
1) No nudity.
2) No large signs of religious or political affiliation.
3) No symbiology of universally recognized hate groups.
4) No frightening or threatening avatars.
5) No weapons worn or wielded.
6) No intellectual property violation.

Q.Do people read here real books?
A. There are some real books here, yes, that are in the public domain; there are also titles created by SL residents :) Libraries do much more than just books though :)

Q. Is there always a librarian on duty here?
A. A librarian or greeter is around most of the time. A schedule is forthcoming.

Q. I am doing a presentation in a few days about the educational uses of SL. What, on Infoisland, should I take a snapshot of, that would actually convey the *uses* of this place?
A. The Open Air Theater at Info Island (120, 89, 33) is a great example.

Q. What kind of services does this library offer?
A. Reference! Got a question about real life or second life? We've got answers! And, electronic collections (links to URLS that launch in your browser and ebooks), sorted by topic, like:

  • Government documents
  • Art
  • Health
  • Nineteenth Century Collections
  • Science fiction
  • Mystery

Programs:

  • Book discussion
  • Authors
  • Lectures
  • Tech topics
  • Tours

Q. When can I get a tour?
A. Tours are frequently scheduled. Currently, tours are Thursday at 1:30 PM SL and Friday at 9:00 PM SL. Meet at the Welcome Center on Info Island. For other dates and times, please check the events area on Infoisland.org

Q. What is in the Main Building?
A. Reader's Advisory tool that dispenses booklists (at the moment, NYT bestsellers), and an oversized eBook by an SL citizen about how to start a biz in SL, as well as a number of other e-books

Q. How can I access the library?
A. This is the main building, and you can walk right in through the
arches... You have to right click on the door and select open to get
in.

Q. What is there to do here?
A. Check out the calendar and the new map! lots to do... visit a coffeehouse, tour an exhibit of children's literature dedicated to a little girl named Rachel...visit Health info island and take the walking path and read poetry at the vistas...Visit some of the following:

A. Alliance Islands:

Volunteering

Q. I noticed a sign asking for volunteers, what does that entail?
A. We need help! 2 hours a week is a typical shift. You might do a program, or a ref shift, training or a tour. A list of opportunities is in the Main Building at Info Island (102, 164, 33). IM Hypatia Dejavu for schedule and more info. And check out http://infoisland.org!

Q. I don't have a MLS, so I'm not sure I would qualify as a reference librarian.
A. Nope, you be a greeter though :)

Q. Do a lot of people volunteer?
A. Yep, we have around around 50 regulars, 200 total probably! The Open Air Auditorium at Info Island(120, 89, 33) is the host to a flags of the world display that represents the diversity of the volunteers.

Q. Who comes here for library work?
A. it's a mix... the librarians volunteers to help are from all over the world for creating collections and doing volunteer reference and providing programs continuing education.

Q. Do you know what types of keywords people use when searching to end up here?
A. Good question I don't, but maybe I need to ask

ABOUT SL
Q. How big is SL?
A. SL is really, really, REALLY big; over 3 million avatar accounts and more land than you'll ever see

Q. Can I see all of SL on my map?
A. No, that map is a very tiny portion of the whole.

Q. Are there countries?
A. There are "sims," which is short for "simulator"

Q. Are there rich and poor areas here?
A. Well, nobody is truly poor, because you can live happily in SL with no food, water or shelter. But yes, you can spend a lot of RL money here to buy SL things like nice houses, clothes for your avatar. SL has its own economy, and the Linden dollar is measured against the US dollar.

Q. How many L$ are $1 US?
A. Around 250, depending on the current rates

Q. Are there jobs in SL?
A. Some RL people have gotten rich with businesses here, but most people cannot mke RL livings from SL. You can get a job to earn L$, but it is not necessary. For more on getting a job, please visit http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=317

Q. May I go to school here?
A. There are lots of classes all over SL you can attend. If you click "Search-> Events" and choose "Education" you can see what's coming up

Q. Are there sports in SL?
A. You can play golf :)

Q. What is there to do here?
A.If you're looking for other cool places to visit, right-click on an avatar, you can view their profile. Click "Picks" in their profile to find cool places to visit! For some ideas, check out Second Seeker -- Unoffical Second Life Reviews http://secondseeker.com/, a blog style travel guide to Second Life locations

Q. Have you seen any of the research on "people" behavior in SL?
A. Yes! And this blog post may be of interest, too:
http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2007/03/sxsw_interactiv.html

Q. What can I do about griefers?
A. Send an abuse report with copies of objects and notecards if possible. Take screenshots. Ask witnesses to file a report too. Consider taking Hypatia's class on Griefers

Q. What do I do if i spot underage users (less than 18 years old)

A. Ask them if they realize the MG is only 18+ and be kind and clear with them that they need to log out immediately. Grab the chat log, and file an abuse report from the help menu (paste the chat). LindenLab will then put a hold on their account until the teen can provide ID. They would be transferred to TG if the person provides ID that shows they're under age. Recommend they visit Eye4You Alliance on the Teen Grid.

Q. How do you take a video of SL?
A. See Eric Linden's White Paper on Making Machinima in Second Life http://s3.amazonaws.com/static-secondlife-com/_files/making_machinima.pdf

LANDMARKS AND TELEPORTING
Q. What is there to do here?
A. If you right-click on an avatar, you can view their profile. Click "Picks" in their profile to find cool places to visit!

Q. How do I create a landmark?
A. Click "World" then click "Create Landmark Here"

Q. Can I teleport myself to each part of the world?
A. You can TP anywhere you are allowed; some areas are restricted to particular people. Landowners can set permissions however they want. The vast majority of areas are open, however.

Q. Why can't I teleport from a profile?
A. You have to have the Client menu on your top menu choices, to the right of Help. If you don't, activate this by using ctl-alt-d. Then on the Client menu, activate the bottom choice: View Admin Options. Teleport buttons will now show on profiles again. Note: this also activates some other things you may not be used to seeing. Please use discretion in dealing with this new information as it becomes apparent."

Q. How do I get to those coordinates you gave to me?
A. Click Map (bottom left corner, next to inventory). There are 3 drop down menus to the left of the map. Next to the search button, type the name of the Sim in that field and click "Search" then look down a little to where it says location and enter the 3 coordinates: first number in the first box, next number in the second, third in the last box, then click Teleport! You can also just open your mini-map and click in the middle of info Island II and wander a bi

Q. How do I get to the landmark you sent?
A. It's in your inventory. If you accidentally close the window before you have a chance to view it, open inventory click the recent tab. Any landmarks sent to you go to the recent folder til you log off. The next time you log on, they are automatically filed in your Landmark folder in the inventory.

OBJECTS & INVENTORY
Q. Can I delete Library items?
A. No. "Main system folders, meaning the ones with special icons like

contents, or the Trash."
http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=074

Q. How do I find clothing?
A. Check out Lady Shankle's Fashion Search at http://google.com/coop/cse?cx=006110526166595476392%3Axzoayrramx0

Q. How do I use all these things you gave me?
A. Clothing: click on it twice, and you''ll wear it.
Animations: click on and it makes a little window. Preview by clicking play local, or you can play in world and all will see.

Q. How do I see hidden objects on my land?
A. If you don't have CLIENT at the top of your screen just do the key command, "Ctrl Alt d" and it should pop up. The world below you is suddenly revealed and you can maneuver around and see what's there. Be sure to click "Surface Patch" back on when you're done looking! If you don't have "Client" at the top of your screen just do the key command, CTRL + ALT + D (command+ CTRL+D on a Mac).

Q. How do I get rid of the orientation HUD?
A. This HUD cannot always be detached by clicking on the screen like most HUDs. The alternative work-around is to have the user open the Inventory and type the word: worn. This will bring up everything they have on, including the HUD. They can then detach it by right clicking on it. If that doesn't work, you may need to clear your cache and relog.

ANIMATIONS AND SCRIPTS

Q. Why are you all jumping like that?
A. It's the mosh hop dance!

Q. How do I stop dancing?
A. Click Tools and pick "Stop all animations"

OnlineTutorials

Q. How do I learn to....
* build a chair in Second Life
* create an interactive sign in Second Life
* embed an image (texture) onto an object in Second Life
* embed a notecard onto an object in Second Life
* link an object to a webpage in Second Life
* create links within a notecard in Second Life
* create a dropbox in Second Life
* create a teleport link in Second Life

A. You can find tutorials for these here: http://cterport.ed.uiuc.edu/technologies_folder/SL/

And there are more, on more topics, here: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Video_Tutorials

Voice

Download the First Look viewer with Voice at: http://secondlife.com/community/firstlook.php

When you first start voice, your mic may be on all the time and any sound in your area will be broadcast for all to hear. Start by changing your settings. In the Edit/Preferences panel there will be a new tab for voice. he top two buttons should be checked. The bottom should not. The three important settings are:

  • "Enable voice chat" (CHECK this)
  • "Use Push to Talk" (CHECK this)
  • "Push to talk acts as a toggle" (UNCHECK this)

Once you set up, there are three ways to be heard:

  1. Take note of the dark gray line labeled "Push to talk trigger." Hold that key (on your keyboard) whenever you want to talk
  2. At the bottom of your view there's a blue "Talk" button. Hold that by clicking on it and holding the button down with your mouse while you talk
  3. The left portion of the talk button is a small lock icon. Click the lock to keep talk turned on and use your microphone hands-free. Click again to turn your microphone off.

HELP with VOICE

There is a group in-world called 'Voice Mentors' that can be joined for help with Voice.

Voice Help on the SL Wiki: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Voice_Mentors http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Voice

If you can't use voice at all, visit http://www.testmyvoip.com to test. If you fail the test there you can't presently use voice in Second Life due to firewall restrictions. Be patient, it's being worked on.

Now a little fine tuning may be in order. Watch the waves over your head. If you talk at a normal volume, the waves should stay green most of the time. In most cases, it's okay if they turn red once in a while. It's a good idea to ask people around you if your volume is all right with them. If you're too loud or quiet you'll need to adjust your mic volume.

For Windows:

  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Double click Sounds And Audio Devices
  3. Click the Voice tab
  4. Click volume
  5. Adjust the slider until you rarely see red

For Mac:

  1. Click the Apple in the top left corner
  2. Select System Preferences
  3. Click "Sound"
  4. Choose "Output" to adjust headphones, using the slider
  5. Choose "Input" to adjust microphone, using the slider (for best results, the Input Level should fall in a range of 2/3 to 3/4 full)

QUESTIONS ABOUT VOICE

Q. Is there any way to print out what's said in Voice? Meetings-classes-lectures-etc. Will whoever has to take minutes of meetings have to sit there listening AND typing into Chat for those without Voice AND madly writing notes on what was said?
A. If it was typed into chat you can just print it anyway so no need for both. Another option is to take notes with a pen & paper, just like RL .
Q. During a conversation with someone or a class, Chat History made it easy to scroll back to see if I'd understood someone correctly or catch what someone said that I missed. How will LL duplicate that with Voice?
A. Ask them to repeat. So far, there is not a voice record option in SL.

Q. When several people are participating in a conversation, Chat History identifies who said what. When I don't know many of the people, how will I know who said what?
A. Watch the screen - the avatar with the green waves over his/her head is speaking (you can enable name viewing in Edit/Preferences).

Alternatively, click on the "Communicate" button to see who is speaking. You can look at people chatting "Near you" to see who is speaking.

Q. Sometimes I've sent an IM to someone in order to quietly help the person without having to discuss a question or problem for everybody to hear. That's especially helpful to new people in SL. Can I still identify a person who needs help?
A. Voice has an IM option too, but text IM and chat still remain.

Q. I looked at the Linden Lab page of GBH Communications Inc earphone/microphones for sale. The better ones are expensive. Getting an inexpensive one isn't a solution because when it doesn't work satisfactorily, I'm going to have to buy a better one anyway.
A. A USB set with noise cancellation for both phones & mic is your best bet. Amazon has some good quality, less expensive options. Some favorites:
Logitech Clear Chat ($19.99)

Logitech Clear Chat Style ($24.99)
Creative HS-600 ($34.99)
Logitech Digital Precision PC Gaming Headset ($49.99)
