Clean Up Your Google TV Home Screen: Settings vs Launchers

Start by identifying your TV operating system and the clutter you want to remove. A simpler home screen, fewer recommendations and fewer installed packages are different changes.

Identify the platform first

Record the manufacturer, exact model and operating-system version from the TV’s settings. Google TV is an interface built on Android TV OS, but menus and launcher behavior vary by device and firmware. A Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Roku or Hisense VIDAA device does not become Android TV because it is a smart television.

Also record your goal. Hiding recommendation rows is an interface preference. Replacing Home changes the launcher. Disabling packages changes which system services are available. Do not start with package removal if rearranging favorites would solve the problem.

First option: ordinary home-screen settings

On supported Google TV profiles, look for the Apps only mode option in the profile/account settings, following Google’s current instructions. Menu wording can differ. This setting reduces personalized recommendations; it is not a promise to remove all promotional content or all activity collection.

Before enabling it, read the current feature limitations on that support page and note how to switch it off. Check that your preferred apps remain easy to reach and that the remote actions you use still behave as expected. Privacy controls are separate settings, so do not assume a cleaner Home screen changes them.

Second option: an alternative launcher

A launcher changes the screen you use to open applications. Before installing one, confirm compatibility with your exact platform, how the Home button selects it, and how to return to the original launcher. Keep the original launcher enabled until you have a documented recovery route.

CleanYourTV is one project worth researching for Android/Google TV cleanup. Its documentation describes launcher selection and restoration. Treat that as project-specific documentation, not universal instructions for every television. Use the official repository to check supported workflows; do not install a similarly named download solely because it appears in a search result.

Package cleanup is a separate decision

Do not copy a debloat list from a different TV model. A package you do not recognize may be involved in updates, input selection, remote behavior or sign-in. Read every proposed change and preserve the exact original state and restoration instructions for your device.

This article intentionally does not provide a universal ADB removal command. We have not validated such a command against your hardware. If you proceed with a device-specific project, understand its restore procedure before running its installation or cleanup scripts.

Write the recovery plan before changing Home

  1. Record the original launcher and the current Home-button behavior.
  2. Save the exact device model, firmware and project instructions used.
  3. Identify how to choose the stock launcher again and how to re-enable it if a workflow disables it.
  4. After each small change, test Home, Settings, inputs, playback and a restart.
  5. Turn off debugging when you no longer need the connection.

The CleanYourTV launcher documentation notes that returning to the original launcher requires it to be enabled; its restore documentation is therefore part of the setup reading, not an afterthought. A factory reset is a disruptive last resort that can remove accounts and app data, not a convenient undo button.

Which route should you try?

If your goal is fewer recommendation rows, first investigate the built-in profile settings. If you want a different app grid, investigate a compatible launcher with a clear return path. Only consider package changes when there is a specific remaining problem and documentation for your exact model. Report the device and firmware when comparing results with other readers.
